Left Behind
More than 3 out of 10 people that have arrived in Greece seeking a safe haven from conflict and poverty since 2015 are children and teenagers, according to UNHCR numbers.
Though resilient, minors are among the most vulnerable displaced population. Access to health and education, as well as safety, are the most common challenges they face when they take the journey from their homes to Europe.
Some get lost, others lose their families, and most misplace the little possessions they travel with. This essay depicts objects left behind by children in their entrance and transit throughout Greece and the spaces that represent Europe to them.
From the arrival points in the coasts of Lesvos, to the frontier in with Macedonia, children have been everywhere, seen everything, and have left behind traces of their displacement that put in perspective not only the magnitude of the emergency, but who is the world failing the most by not addressing conflict-induced migration from a humane and compassionate perspective.
Left Behind was displayed in the Viewpoints: Migration, Mobility and Displacement Exhibition.
