UNIDOS - Hispanic Federation Puerto Rico

The Challenge

Since the 2017 Hurricane season devastated Puerto Rico, Hispanic Federation created the UNIDOS program and raised over 30 million USD for relief and recovery efforts throughout the island. Yet the UNIDOS website, created to showcase results and encourage both donor and grantees participation in recovery initiatives, was not yielding the desired outcome.

The Result

The UNIDOS site re-launched with an interactive storytelling-based approach. The new site clarifies the UNIDOS mission, organizes the comprehensive work done in the 10 focus areas for recovery, incorporates and interactive map of all the activities activities across Puerto Rico, and keeps pushing for the legislative changes needed to overcome the challenges on the island that cannot be solved through private initiatives. We are currently taking up the challenge on how to keep advancing communities throughout the island in light of political turmoil, the January earthquakes and COVID-19.

Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund

The Challenge

In 2014, the Hispanic Federation, Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, New York Urban League and Asian American Federation formed an alliance, along with the Black Agency Executives, to provide capacity-building support to Black, Latino, and Asian-led community-based organizations throughout New York City’s five boroughs. But the information about the initiative was scattered, outdated and the application process was decentralized.

The Result

Hispanic Federation spearheaded the creation of a website that hosts the RFA, and answers questions about the application process, while also showcasing the results previous grantees have achieved. This allowed for a more organized and efficient application process for the 2020 cohort.

LEAD Coalition

The Challenge

The Latino Educational Advocacy Directors (LEAD) coalition, created by the Hispanic Federation, consists of leading educational advocacy organizations committed to improve Latino academic outcomes and opportunities in New York State.

How can LEAD advocate for multilingual learners (MLLs), share their proposals and achievements, and inspire action in an engaging and bilingual manner?

The Result

A bilingual site that host a report on the situation of Multilingual Learners in NYS, clearly states what the coalition is proposing to promote change, and makes it easy for parents, teachers, students and citizens to get involved in the cause.

A brand identity that reflects the coalition and keeps the report, the website, the social media material and other public communications cohesive.

Movimiento Hispano

The Challenge

2020 is a crucial year for democracy in the US. With an Election Day to elect the next POTUS, and the Census, it’s vital and urgent to get the country civically engaged, especially after all the voting disenfranchisement and census intimidations efforts that communities of color have been subjected to in recent times.

The Result

To facilitate access to information related to both events for the Hispanic community, Hispanic Movement created two digital products with tools and information about the census and voting registration. The first one is in English and contains resources aimed at the Hispanic population in Mainland US. The second one is in Spanish and the information is presented for both Mainland US and Puerto Rico audiences, since the elections and the census work very differently in the island. We have complemented our advocacy efforts, especially in Spanish, through the use of P2A and campaigns in social media supported by promoted content.

Venezuelan Assistance Corp- VAC

The Challenge

Venezuelans living in both Venezuela and abroad (the diaspora is estimated at 5 million people) are very vulnerable when they need medical assistance. Those in Venezuela face a collapsed public health system and a private network of providers that are overwhelmed and sometimes unable to provide life-saving care due to the supplies scarcity, water shortage and power outages. Venezuelans abroad are more likely to be uninsured, especially in countries with no public option, due to lack of knowledge of the systems, low purchasing power and, depending on the country, discrimination. Both groups are constantly targets of predatory practices and fraud when trying to access insurance policies.

The Result

Venezuelan Assistance Corp, or VAC, offers vetted insurance policies to Venezuelans in Venezuela and abroad, providing both employment within the diaspora and ensuring that those in need of assistance don’t fall for predators. Through their website, designed only for informational purposes only, VAC seeks to convey a message of trust by emphasizing the availability of the service and moving away from traditional insurance branding and aesthetics that are associated with complications, fraud and bad customer service.
